See form drop-off and submissions

On this page

Forms on pages with the tag are found automatically when they appear on screen. In the Forms tab of Web analytics, you can see where people drop off between viewing and submitting a form, and which fields they leave at. What people type is kept only if you turn on the setting to keep submissions.

Before you begin

  • Install the tag (Get started with Web analytics).
  • Make sure Analyze forms is on in Settings & tag. It’s on from the start.
  • Search forms aren’t counted. To exclude other forms, add data-mukumo-ignore to the <form>.

The form list

Column Meaning
Views How many times the form appeared on screen
Starts How many times someone touched any field
Submissions How many times it was submitted
Submit rate The share of views that ended in a submission
Abandoned How many times someone started filling in the form and left without submitting
Time to submit (median) The time from starting to submitting

If you’ve embedded a form built with Forms on your website, it’s marked Forms, and only views and submissions are counted.

Numbers by field

Select a form to see numbers for each field.

Column Meaning
Touched How many visits touched the field
Avg. time in field The average time spent in the field
Left here How many times the field was the last one touched before someone left without submitting. The field with the most is shown in red
Re-entered How many times someone went back and changed something after entering it
Input errors How many times the browser’s checks (required, format) stopped someone
Sent empty How many times the field was submitted empty. It may be a field you don’t need

For fields with many Left here or Input errors, adding an explanation, making the field optional, or loosening the input format can raise your submit rate.

Keep form submissions

If you turn on Keep form submissions in Settings & tag, you can see what people submitted in the Forms tab, alongside their source and journey. People who entered an email address are listed in Contacts.

  • You’ll be storing personal information, so update your site’s privacy policy before you turn it on (see the sample text under What to add to your privacy policy).
  • These are never collected: passwords, likely card numbers, fields that look like a security code, expiry date, PIN, My Number or bank account, fields marked data-mukumo-ignore, hidden fields, and files.
  • For a form that has a likely card-number field, the submission isn’t kept at all. Don’t use this on payment or medical consultation pages.
  • Submissions are deleted after 2 years. You can also delete them one at a time (Member or higher).

After you change a setting, it can take up to about 5 minutes to take effect in visitors’ browsers.
